London’s Ikoyi absolutely deserves its 2 Michelin stars

With two Michelin stars to its name, Ikoyi is not just another fine dining spot in London—it’s a unique culinary adventure that brings West African-inspired flavors to the forefront in a way that’s rarely seen at this level. If you're used to the typical Michelin experience, Ikoyi offers something refreshingly different, making it stand out among the many starred restaurants we've had the pleasure of visiting (and trust us, we’ve been to more than we can count).

The Menu: A blind experience

Right off the bat, Ikoyi surprised us by declaring that the meal would be a blind tasting. Our server walked us through the flow of the evening, explaining how many starters, mains, and desserts we could expect, and then that was it! We never saw a menu and we had no idea what dishes would be served. We of course received detailed descriptions as the dishes were placed in front of us, but otherwise we were full of excitement and speculation. It made for an incredibly fun experience and allowed us to be caught off guard in the best way. Thinking of everything, the restaurant provided us with a complete menu afterward to take home so that we could relive all each wonderful dish in detail.

If you want the same blind experience then you can skip the rest of our review and just book a table. Spoilers ahead!

The Dishes: Bold, distinct, and beautifully presented

From the moment the first plate arrives, Ikoyi showcases its ability to delight. Each dish is not only beautifully plated but packed with bold, unexpected flavors. Our palette cleanser was a peppered caramelized chicken wing broth, followed by delectable snacks with flavors ranging from salted citrus to vin jaune (French for "yellow wine").

At Ikoyi, you’ll encounter combinations that push the boundaries of fine dining. Ingredients like Scotch Bonnet peppers, Nigerian tigernuts, and fermented vegetables bring a richness and depth to every bite, perfectly balanced by delicate proteins and vibrant spices. Many dishes at Ikoyi combine elements of land and sea to create complex combinations. Every bite at Ikoyi feels purposeful, with ingredients that are not just carefully selected but meticulously paired to create harmony on the plate.

What’s particularly exciting about Ikoyi is how different it feels from many of the Michelin-starred restaurants we've been to. There’s an earthiness and warmth to the flavors that are distinct from the more familiar French, Italian, or even Japanese-inspired fine dining menus. Each dish delivers a sense of adventure and exploration, making the dining experience more dynamic than what you'd expect from a typical Michelin meal.

The Experience: Service and ambience

Beyond the food, the service at Ikoyi was solid and polished, as you’d expect from a restaurant of this caliber. The staff was knowledgeable and attentive without being intrusive, creating an experience that felt both elevated and welcoming. They were more than happy to explain the inspiration behind the dishes, which added to our appreciation of the unique flavor profiles we were tasting.

We’d describe the atmosphere as warm yet sophisticated. The design of the restaurant is minimalist but chic, with an inviting feel. There’s a lively energy in the room, but the space remains intimate enough for conversation to flow easily, making it a great place for a special occasion or a memorable night out.

The Pace: Settle in for the evening

Be prepared for a long, luxurious meal—our seating spanned around four hours, but it was a journey worth taking. The pace is leisurely, giving you time to savor each course and enjoy the thoughtfully designed progression of flavors. If you’re a fan of the slow, multi-course dining experience, Ikoyi hits all the right notes.

The Price: A High-End Investment

Ikoyi’s unique experience comes with a high price tag, as is expected of a two-Michelin-starred restaurant. It’s undoubtedly a splurge, but for those who love fine dining and crave something different from the norm, it’s worth every penny.

The tasting menu is £350, served for dinner from Monday to Friday, as well as for lunch on Fridays (with a slight discount, bringing it to £320). Ikoyi also offers a shorter lunch menu for £200 on Wednesdays and Thursdays, a great option for anyone who wants to experience Ikoyi at a slightly more approachable price point.

Final Verdict: For fine dining lovers who want bold flavor

If you’re in London and seeking an unforgettable dining experience that’s different from the usual Michelin picks, Ikoyi is a must-visit. The combination of bold, West African-inspired flavors, beautifully crafted dishes, and a warm, polished atmosphere makes it an exciting destination for food lovers. It may be pricy, but for those who appreciate the art of fine dining—and especially for couples or groups with adventurous palates—it’s an investment worth making. For us, Ikoyi is an undeniable stand out.
